Discover Your Unique Leadership Style: 5 easy steps to Unleash Your Full Potential as a Manager.
In my practice, I see so many new and more experienced managers willing to find their unique leadership style in order to feel more confident and be seen as impactful leaders.
As I really enjoy being their companion on this journey of self-discovery, I've always observed and appreciated a few foundational values that helped them start working on their leadership style as honesty, vulnerability, and courage to try new approaches.
Those inner values always helped those leaders to be ok with taking uncomfortable actions and be empowered with their unique leadership style.
Now, let's get into those five steps to understand and hone your leadership style as a new manager:
1. Identify your values:
Start by identifying your core values by reflecting on what motivates and inspires you in your life (not only at work), and how you can use those qualities to lead your team effectively. Consider taking leadership assessments or seeking feedback from others (colleagues, direct reports, and managers) to gain a better understanding of your leadership style.
2. Observe other successful leaders:
Take the time to observe other successful leaders in your organization or industry. Pay attention to their communication style, and how they motivate and inspire their team. Get to know those successful leaders by interviewing them. Ask about their own values, and observe the behaviors and habits that align with your own values and leadership style.
3. Learn from your mistakes:
As a new manager, you will make mistakes. Instead of beating yourself up, use these experiences as an opportunity to learn and grow. Reflect on what went wrong and what you could have done differently. Use these lessons to refine your leadership style and approach.
4. Seek feedback:
Seek feedback from your team, peers, and superiors. Ask for specific examples of what you're doing well and where improvement can be made. Use this feedback to refine your approach and improve your leadership skills.
5. Continuously learn and develop:
Discovering your leadership style is a continuous learning process, a journey by itself.
From my experience of coaching in all kinds of industries and within different cultures, the leaders that are honing their authentic leadership style, and having the best impact, are those that have created the needed self-awareness to make the right choices with conviction yet, are willing to learn and grow from their mistakes.
Prioritize ongoing learning and development. Attend leadership workshops, read books on leadership, and seek out mentorship opportunities. Pick a mentor in your organization you admire, and that challenges you to grow.
Your intention to grow will make a difference.
Nevertheless, growth takes a good amount of energy. So, bring self-care to the table to set you up with positive and uplifting energy.
In summary, understanding and honing your leadership style as a manager requires self-reflection, observation, learning from mistakes, seeking feedback, ongoing learning and development, and self-care.
Now, which step are you choosing to start LIVING your authentic Leadership style?
